Mkuru Camel Safari (MCS) is a community-based initiative managed by a group of Maasai and Meru people under the umbrella of Tanzania Tourism Board (Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism).
Istituto Oikos recently provided further support to the already existing MCS, with the building of the Mkuru Camel Camp, the base camp for hosting tourists and to start the camel safari tours, the provision of training opportunities for Maasai and Meru tourist guides and the development of a new business
I visited the camp walking from Mkuru one afternoon. They do not receive many tourists during the week, but they were preparing the camp for the week end. Their business strategy is still week, compared to that of safari companies in town. But Rome was not bult in a day..
Now it’s low season beacuse many routes are flooded due to heavy rainfall. I wish I could reach Lake Natron in a walking-camel safari, when the dry season comes!
