One of the project supported by Istituto Oikos and Oikos East Africa, is the Tanzanian Maasai Women Art (TMWA) a project supporting an informal network of Maasai women artisans to overcome poverty by improving their access to education and income generating opportunities.
For centuries beaded jewelry has been a mark of beauty and prosperity among the Maasai tribes of Eastern Africa. Today, thanks to TMWA, it represents the possibility for many Maasai women of Tanzania to establish a business that reflects and celebrates their rich cultural heritage.
